A new motorcycle trip means a new story, adding a new level of emotion and a taste of freedom. If you want to make the tour story memorable, always plan the tour with time and your experience of the trip will be much better than sudden planning. Here are some steps that I followed before going on a trip. Hope this will help you to make things easier for a tour plan.
1. Research and select your destination
Whenever you are planning for a tour, your first duty is to check your budget, make your tour plan according to the season, and don’t forget to take into account your riding ability or skill. Make a list of places where you want to go and the type of test you are looking for. Is it a scenic view, historical landmarks, or a local culture? Then research well according to your test. Plan your trip based on how long you can comfortably ride your motorcycle. If you are new or for the first time planning a tour then select your destination that is relatively short in distance. Once you are experienced you are good to go for longer distances.
2. Plan your route
After researching and selecting a destination for the tour, it’s time to select a route according to your driving skill and ability. Do the research to find a route that you can navigate safely, both your time and money will be saved. Gather information about the road condition and construction updates on the roads you will be riding on. Check the weather pattern of your destination. Avoid riding in adverse weather.
3. Prepare your motorcycle
Before going for the tour make sure your motorcycle is in perfect condition. Check the tire pressure and condition. Inspect your brake response, brake fluid condition, and level and brake pads. Check the engine oil and coolant quality and quantity properly. Make sure the battery is in good condition and your motorcycle lights and horn are functioning properly. If any of these are required to be changed or fixed then change them or fix them. If the motorcycle has not been ridden for a long time after changing the engine oil, I recommend changing the engine oil before going on a tour, which I do every time I go for a tour.
Kits: Carry a basic tool kit that includes wrenches, screwdrivers, a tire repair kit, and duct tape. Don’t forget to have a first aid kit for emergencies.
4. Be prepared with Gear and safety
Gear: Wear the right motorcycle gear for maximum safety. Invest in a high-quality helmet, riding jacket, gloves, boots, and knee and thigh pads. My advice is to use a full-face helmet while going for a tour. A full-face helmet ensures better protection for your face and head.
Safety: Carry a GPS tracker and in addition a physical map. For additional safety, share your route or schedule with your family and friends. Don’t forget to carry your medical information and a number for emergency contacts.
5. Planning the itinerary
Reserve the place in advance where you want to stay. I went on a tour once 2 years ago when I was a student. Frankly speaking, my budget was low and due to the sudden plan, the time was less also. So without thinking about it much, I booked a hotel which was quite cheap. When I and two other friends got diarrhea after eating the hotel food, we realized that the food was also cheap. Research well on local hotels, restaurants, and food. The most horrible incident happened the first night we slept with the window open unfortunately a snake entered our room but luckily didn’t bite anyone. So don’t waste your trip always looking for everything at a cheaper rate. If you prefer camping then research your camping route and fix a safer spot for camping. Start your riding early in the morning so that you can avoid riding at night. Riding at night on unfamiliar roads is quite dangerous. Stop your motorcycle after a certain time. Give yourself and your motorcycle a little break, hydrate yourself, and ride again. Don’t forget to take a hydration pack.
6. Stay connected
If you are riding in a group stay connected to everyone seamlessly. Maintaining good communication with other riders makes navigation easier. Use a communicator or a Bluetooth device to stay connected. Maintaining good communication helps in emergencies.
Make your ride more enjoyable to be more flexible to change your plan. Engage with the locals to know more about the place, culture, or any hidden gems. The essence of a motorcycle trip is not only reaching your destination but also collecting memories and enjoying the trip.
