The main function of paint coating is to create a hard shield on the paint to protect the paintwork from any kind of damage and hold the gloss. There are different types of coating available on the market and it is difficult to determine which one is better among them. If you don’t have any knowledge about motorcycle paint coating, no problem, I will help you understand and make the right decision about coating.
Let’s understand first why paint coating is important. UV rays, derbies, rainwater, bird droppings, and other environmental factors can cause scratches, fade, or damage your motorcycle paint over time. To protect motorcycle paint from these potential hazards and to hold the shine like brand new coating is important. Here are some popular options for coating-
1. Teflon coating
Teflon coating is made with synthetic fluoropolymer properties. It is also known as (PTFE) full meaning is polytetrafluoroethylene. The thickness of this coating is 0.02 microns like traditional wax. The good thing about this coating is it is easy to apply, meaning you don’t need any professional to apply this you can do it by yourself at home. It leaves a glossy finish on the paint and it is cost effective also. The bad thing about this coating is, that it can only protect from dust and minor scratches, will not protect your motorcycle paint for a long time, wears out quickly, and requires frequent reapplying.
2. Ceramic coating
Like wax ceramic coating is also very popular but pretty expensive. I applied ceramic coating on my motorcycle around three and half years ago and still, my motorcycle paint looks newly painted. The good thing about ceramic coating is it provides 9h hardness according to the pencil hardness scale and 2 microns thickness that can easily resist minor scratches and swirl marks. Long-lasting, protects paint from UV rays, harmful chemicals, and debris that sticks to the surface, enhances and holds paint gloss. The drawback is that the coating is quite expensive, needs special maintenance, only can be protected from minor scratches, and needs a professional hand for application and removal.
3. Graphene coating
Though it’s relatively new in the market it’s getting popular in a short period. The good side of graphene coating is more stronger and flexible than ceramic coating which reduces the risk of cracking, easier to apply and remove. It does pretty much the same work as ceramic coating does. The bad side of this coating is that it is expensive and not as popular as a ceramic coating.
4. Polymer coating
The polymer coating is also known as resin coating. These coatings are for those who want a balanced pricing or protection between ceramic and graphene coating. This coating is made with synthetic formula, easy to apply and remove, enhances paint shine, and provides a decent amount of protection from UV rays and minor scratches. It also had bad sides that this coating won’t last for long. Its life span is not more than a year and it needs frequent reapplication.
Okay, now let me help you to understand what coating you should pick between these. These are some popular and effective coating varieties that will be good options for protecting your motorcycle paint. Most of the time your budget decides your affordability. If you are on a budget and looking for the maximum protection, professional finish, and long-life shell of coating the best selection will be Graphene coating and the second choice can be Ceramic coating. Though I’m a user of ceramic coating, next time when I will coat my motorcycle paint I’ll go for graphene coating. Although the quality of these two coatings is almost the same, I would like to put the graphene coating slightly ahead for its material and durability. If your budget is low you can go for Teflon or Polymer coating. They also provide a good level of protection.
Finally, I want to say that, no matter what coating you apply, if not properly maintained it will only be a waste of money and work.
