At the very beginning of motorcycling no one cared about buying motorcycle tools, not even cared about it. Over time I realise that carrying tools for even minimal fixing can get someone out of big trouble. I think every motorcycle rider must have tools for maintaining their motorcycle. Let’s talk about some tools that have worked very well for me.
1. Wrenches
Wrenches are commonly used for tightening and losing bolts and nuts. Do not forget about the spark plug wrench and spanner wrench. Spark plug wrenches are used for removing and installing spark plugs. Spanner wrench comes with curved ends and they are commonly used for adjusting round fasteners with holes or notches and suspensions.
2. Screwdrivers
Screwdrivers are commonly used for fixing brake, suspension, engine components, body panels, and electrical components. For instant or small to major fixing have a screwdriver set so that you can fix it on your own and step out for unusual trouble.
3. Chain tools
To keep your motorcycle chain to the right tension, and clean dirt, grime, and rust you need some tools such as chain cleaning liquid and brush, lubricant, breaker, alignment, and tension gauge. By cleaning brush, liquid, and lubricant you can easily clean and lubricate your motorcycle chain whenever you want. A chain breaker is needed when you want to replace the chain or adjust the chain. To ensure proper alignment of the chain with the sprocket you may need a chain alignment. To maintain the correct tension you must have a chain tension gauge.
4. Tire repair tools
To avoid unnecessary trouble with flat tires or to get rid of such a situation you need tools like a patch kit, tire levers, rim protector, pressure gauge, sealant/gel, and inflector. Patch kits are mainly used for fixing small punctures in inner tubes. Tire levers are used for removing the tire from rims and installation. When removing the tire use a rim protector to avoid any kind of scratches on the rim. Pressure gauges are used to measure the correct tire pressure. Sealant/gel is used for fixing or sealing small puncture holes in tubeless tires. Get an inflector to inflect the tire when needed. In my recommendation, get an air inflector for the garage and a CO2 inflector for the emergency inflector in the middle of the road.
5. Jump starter
A portable jump starter is a game changer when the motorcycle is not starting due to battery problems or in extremely cold weather. A portable jump starter produces sufficient power to start the engine and for lightweight it is very easy to carry. When your battery is dead, connect the clamps to the battery terminal, turn on the starter, push the self-start button, and start your motorcycle. It also comes with inbuilt USB ports and a flashlight.
6. Security tools
To prevent motorcycles from theft you must have tools like an anti-theft alarm, GPS tracker, disk, and chain locker. An anti-theft alarm triggers and warns when it detects unusual movements. When a motorcycle gets stolen a GPS tracker continuously traces the location and provides information to the owner. The Disc and chain locker prevents the wheel and disk from moving.
7. Emergency tools
When you are middle on the road and you need emergency medical assistance you are not getting any medical support instantly. At that time you have to do first aid on your own until you are rescued and for that, you need some supplies like bandages, antiseptics, ointment, scissors and tweezers, and painkillers. If you are an off-road rider you must have a GPS tracker and physical map. In addition, for emergencies collect emergency contact numbers.
8. For storage
For carrying personal stuff and tools you will need storage on your motorcycle. Have tool rolls for carrying the tools. It is well-organized and easy to carry in your backpack. You can get a backpack like a saddle bag, tank bag, tail bag, top box, and fender bag.
No one wants to buy or maintain all of this stuff at the very beginning of motorcycle riding. After riding a motorcycle for ages when a motorcyclist faces problems over time most of the motorcyclist becomes a petty mechanic like me. When your motorcycle breaks down in the middle of the road and there is no mechanic around, at that time your only hope is these essential tools and your mechanical skill that grows over time.
